In my last post," Unemployed during COVID-19 " I spoke about how I felt being unemployed during COVID-19. I forgot my purpose, I lost my creativity and I was essentially in a bad place. The things I loved doing such as "writing became a burden to me and I allowed my creativity to take a backseat because of my circumstance when initially my circumstance was an avenue for me to show my creativity". Even though I am now employed I know for sure that many persons feel the way I did or have felt this way in the past. So, it's important to note that you are not alone. You can make the best of your situation and get back on track.

I allowed my creativity to take a backseat because of my circumstance, when initially my circumstance was an avenue for me to show my creativity.

Here are 10 things you can do while unemployed during COVID-19

1. Edit your resume - I think I have edited mine almost once a week since being unemployed. I am always trying to make it better especially because the requirements of a good resume are dynamic. Don’t slack up on applying for jobs. Send those resumes! Yes, it can be discouraging when you don’t get feedback but don’t let it deter you.

2. Develop a new skill or hone an old one. Sit in on or participate in webinars, do research, and short courses. Please do not feel pressured to start a course because ‘everyone’ is starting one. If you do find one that would suit you, then that is great! However, if you don’t find one that you’re interested in you can do other productive things. The pressure of thinking you must do a course can add to possible anxiety.

3. Check on your friends and keep in touch with them- when you do get back to work, you may not have the time to do frequent check ups with your friends and family members

4. Enjoy the rest as much as you can - you can read a book that you have been delaying, even catch up on series. It’s ok! Job hunting can be gruesome, and you are allowed to take a breather from time to time.

5. Get in touch with YOURSELF- Being unemployed forced me to deal with many present and past personal issues that I wouldn’t have had time to deal with otherwise. I have also been in touch with my spirituality. I spend more quality time with God.

6. Network- The COVID-19 crisis may prevent you from meeting physically but there are social media platforms like Zoom and Skype that can be used. I find that LinkedIn and Twitter are great for networking. I have met great people from these platforms.

7. Start or complete business ideas you’ve been thinking about- I’ve used the opportunity to get some work done on a few business ideas. Stay Tuned!

8. Volunteer where you can - COVID-19 may limit some of the places you volunteer at but I’m sure you can find places that may need your help. Volunteering keeps your mind active and gives you a routine that reduces possible anxiety.

9. Plan or organize events you’ve been wanting/needing to plan- I’ve gotten the opportunity to focus a little more on my friend’s upcoming wedding. Using the time to plan her bridal shower and bachelorette party.

10. Find other sources of income - If you have a skill you can freelance and get cash flow. I have taken the chance to proofread and edit books. I hope these points help you to navigate through a pandemic while being unemployed. They worked for me! Comment and let me know any other techniques that may work for you.
